First Pair of Real Shoes
On Friday, Miss. Cassie told us that we need to have rubber soled shoes from now on at daycare for M. Since she's walking around all the time, she needs something with traction on the tile floors. So, Ryan and I loaded up and made our first trip to Stride Rite!
M measured a 2.5! She's got teeny tiny feet! M was a fan of silver sequins, so her daycare pair are nice and sparkly. And, she got a pair of tennis shoes for home.
We had M try on both pair of shoes at the store. As soon as she got the shoes on her feet she stood there like she was glued to the floor staring at all of us like we were insane. We ended up having to coax her to walk with a very shiny pair of silver sequin boots for big kids.
I can't believe M is walking. She picked it up sooooo fast. I'm afraid I'm going to have a runner next week! Here's a video of her cruising across the family room today:
Since it was chilly out today, I got a chance to put M in one of my favorite fall outfits that we bought for her...complete with matching winter hat!

Halloween Party!
Last night we headed out to Shelby Twp. for a Halloween Bash that Andrea & Ryan were throwing. They generously provided a keg and guests brought food!
M was a hit at the party. She got picked up and ooh & ahhed over. Everyone seemed pretty surprised that she was walking. She was also quite excited about the balloons on the floor -- her first time ever playing with them. She went to bed pretty easily for us, so Ryan and I were able to stick around until after 1 a.m. which is by FAR the longest we've ever stayed out since M was born.
We had a great time and it was really nice to get out and mingle with friends! Here are some pics from last night:
I'm not sure how we didn't end up with a boys picture...but we had a rocker couple, Juno & Bleeker, Housewife & Old Man, Flo & Duff Man, and then Skeleton & Magnum PI. A few people showed up later and were not pictured, including the cheerleader that had M shaking some pompons with her!
In other news, Jill and Aaron have their anatomy scan on Monday and we're all SUPER excited to find out what they're having! M needs a new BFF!

Pumpkin Party!
Today was the Pumpkin Party at Goddard. Unfortunately I forgot my camera, so I got no shots of her trick or treating, or of her teachers in their awesome costumes (Belle & a ladybug).
The trick or treating was candy free since most of me munchkins can eat any of it anyway. So, M got a bunch of loot that she's been playing with all evening. She's a big fan of the frisbee, blow-up ball & a skeleton straw.
M had lots of fun and even showed off her walking to go get some goodies. I walked around with Marin's mom, whom I really like a lot. The girls are only a month apart so they are going to be in all the same rooms together as the grow up. I actually found out that the live in the neighborhood behind us. Makes for a short drive for play dates :)
Since I had such a mom-fail, please enjoy a couple shots of the goodies she got today as well as some fun in the leaves!
She couldn't keep her hands off all her new toys, so it took a couple shots. Right now, she's thoroughly amused by the skeleton straw.
And, some shots in the leaves before they all get raked up this weekend! Here's a leaf mom!

11 MONTHS OLD!
First, I am so glad these photo shoots are almost over. She is impossible to get to sit still. Only one more to go!
For this shoot, I'm actually pretty bummed out because we didn't get any good pictures of her laying on the monkey for the comparisons. She tore her sticker in half before we could check the pictures we took :( So, this is the best we got.
I cannot believe my baby is going to be a year old in just one month. It is insane how fast time is going. I'm going to have a toddler!!!

Dad reattaching the sticker after she pulled it off almost immediately.
Much happier sitting up. But, that doesn't help with the size comparison, lol.
Showing off her new skill.
Look mom! No hands!!!
And the sticker is destroyed...
...now we must work on the other side.

Steps!
We finally caught some of M "walking" on camera. I'm not going to call it walking just yet, but she's definitely taking steps!

I'll want to remember this.
A friend linked this on FB today and I have a feeling I'll want to remember it in 20 years. So, it goes here.
Dear Me 20 Years From Now,
I wonder if you've become one of those women who briefly lingers around, a safe distance behind, young moms carting their babies and toddlers through the grocery store with that far-off look in your eyes. If you gently smile at the mom when she looks up and catches your glance, obviously frazzled by how challenging taking 2 kids grocery shopping is, as if to tell her it's going to be okay. If you look at her and miss that time, want so badly to trade 5 minutes of the independence you have now that your kids are much older so that you can rest a toddler's head on your shoulder, or buckle a baby in their car seat, mindful not to pinch any belly chub in the harness.
I have a feeling that you might be, and there are some things I want you to know, some things I'm willing you to remember.
I want you to remember that they were the hardest thing you'd ever done. They challenged you, and they kept you up at night. They pushed your buttons, and they were never, ever quiet... unless they were in trouble. I want you to remember that you loved them the hardest you've ever loved anything, from day one, and every day after that.
I want you to know that you were completely overwhelmed nearly all the time. The thought of taking them anywhere by yourself made you want to hide in bed all day. You were overwhelmed by the responsibility. You had NO clue what you were doing. You were overwhelmed by how much they trusted you and how much they needed you. You were overwhelmed by how much you needed and loved them.
I want you to remember how it felt to lay side by side next to your
4-year-old before he drifted off to sleep. How you talked face to face,
nose to nose, about his day. How you told him you were excited to see
how much he would grow by the morning, and how in the morning you'd lay
in bed next to him and stretch his arms and legs out, exclaiming, "LOOK
HOW MUCH YOU GREW LAST NIGHT!" How that put the biggest smile on his
face.
I want you to remember what it felt like to hold your 18-month-old on your lap, wrapping your arms around her and laying them on her bulging tummy. How the back of her head and the handful of baby curls at the nape of her neck felt and smelled when you rested your head atop hers.
I want you to know that you were acutely aware of how fast they were growing. Even though many days would pass in the blink of an eye, there would always be a moment when your world would snap to a halt, and you would look at them while they were doing something mundane and normal, and you would be painfully conscious that they were no longer the size they were last week, and that they would never be the size they are at that moment again.
I want you to know that you went to bed every night with one simple wish for the next day. To just do better.
Even though you were tired and challenged, exasperated and overwhelmed, you knew then that you would miss these days... most of them, at least. It was a truth that was hard to live with, and most of the time you ignored it because there was nothing you could do about the passing of time. If you spent your days mourning the ones that had gone by, you'd miss out on the days you were living in.
You knew you were on a light rail, moving at speeds you couldn't comprehend. You had no control over the ride that brought you to where you are today, but believe me when I say you searched so very hard to find the emergency brake.
Please know, please remember that you tried to savor that time. Be at peace, knowing you spent late afternoons curled up with them on the couch, that sometimes you just sat and watched them move and run, that occasionally you took inventory of all the things they'd learned in the last week, and that you appreciated your time with them the best you knew how. Know that despite your very best efforts, there was no way to freeze time.
I promise you, you tried.
Love,
you

The Parent Test
I read an article today about "The Parent Test" that has recently gone viral. It gave me a few laughs. Thought I'd share it here:
2. Leave it there.
3. After 9 months remove 5% of the beans.
2. Go to the supermarket. Arrange to have your salary paid directly to their head office.
3. Go home. Pick up the newspaper and read it for the last time.
Test 2: Knowledge
Find a couple who are already parents and berate them about their methods of discipline, lack of patience, appallingly low tolerance levels and how they have allowed their children to run wild.
Suggest ways in which they might improve their child's sleeping habits, toilet training, table manners and overall behaviour.
Enjoy it. It will be the last time in your life that you will have all the answers.
Test 3: Nights
1. Walk around the living room from
5pm to 10pm carrying a wet bag weighing approximately 4 - 6kg, with a
radio turned to static (or some other obnoxious sound) playing loudly.
2. At 10pm, put the bag down, set the alarm for midnight and go to sleep.
3. Get up at 11pm and walk the bag around the living room until 1am.

Cider Mill with Jill & Aaron
One of our annual traditions is to head to the cider mill with Jill & Aaron. We go to a mill we've never been to before every year.
This year we headed out to Three Cedars. Ryan and I were there last weekend to get pumpkins, but we've never actually been there for cider and doughnuts.
It was kind of a gross day today, but it was really nice because Three Cedars has indoor seating with HEAT! YAY! Jill and I both had to use the bathroom and were surprised to see it was a building and not outhouses. Except, when we got in there they were just outhouses build into stalls. LOL.
Here are some pics Jill shot of our trip!
They had a whole paved circle with various tractors for the kids to ride. I found a bitty baby one for M...
Chickens! She kept trying to pet them and wasn't happy I wouldn't let her stick her fingers in the chicken wire.
I'm glad we got to hang out with Jill and Aaron! It's always one of my favorite things to do! Next year we'll have TWO little ones to bring to the cider mill!!!

PUMPKINS!
Today we decided to go shopping and then take M to the pumpkin patch. I really wanted to go to a U-Pick patch so we could take a hay ride out to the field, pick our pumpkins, and hay ride back. Buuuuut, when we got out to the patch it was 5:00 and the thermometer on my car was reading a balmy 45. Thank goodness part of our shopping earlier included getting M a winter coat, hat & mittens. We bundled her up in anticipation of heading off on the tractor to pick out pumpkins. We had to park kind of far away, and by the time we got half way to the where the tractor leaves from, I decided that my hands were already ice cubes, M's eyes were watering uncontrollably, and I decided we'd just pick a pumpkin from the already picked ones. There's always next year! So, enjoy some new pics of Miss. M with the pumpkins!
This face kills me!
Someone got stuck in the pumpkins...

Dinner Cruise: Octoberfest!
Friday night Ashley, Eddie, Ryan and I all headed out for a dinner cruise on the Ovation courtesy of my mom and dad.
It was a cold and rainy day, so we knew we'd be spending the trip in the boat and not on the upper deck, lol. We had a great time. We boarded the boat first because we were "captain's circle" and got a glass of champagne to sip on while everyone else boarded.
Dinner was great...beef tenderloin, sweet potato torta, apple & gouda brats, and spaetzel. There were hors d'oeuvres all of which were also pretty tasty. The desserts were to die for. They were all bite sized and included pumpkin truffles, chocolate covered strawberries, lemon meringue, apple crisps, etc. I tried one of almost everything and had several strawberries.
It was open bar. The boys had some dark ale and Ashley and I ordered the white wine. I don't know what kind it was, only that it was a Michigan winery...but it was really good. Sweet and VERY smooth. They ran out about 1/2 way through the cruise :(
The band was awesome. Although a country band was not exactly what I was expecting for an Octoberfest cruise! Ashley and I liked them so much we each bought a CD. They are out of Lansing and I'm kind of surprised I'd never heard of them before after living out there for 3 years.
Here are some pics from the cruise:
After the boat docked, we stuck around on the ship for a little while before we decided to head over to MGM. I told Ryan we could go if he got up with Maddie in the morning...he agreed...so the night was still young. We had a good time playing penny slots. Eddie walked away making money. Ashley lost money. Ryan made money (enough to cover my loss on the night) and then proceeded to waste it all. So, we were down a combined $80 on the night, lol.
Afterward we headed to my parents house so we could pick up Maddie and Ashley & Eddie could pick up their dog Mackie.
As luck would have it, Maddie slept until 9 am, so Ryan didn't even have to get up early with her. Tomorrow is my day and you KNOW she's going to get up at 4 am, lol.
I'd like to do this dinner cruise again, but in the summer when we can sit up on the top deck with a beautiful warm summer night. Hopefully they have one on the weekend next year that isn't in October!
There's the main floor of the ship. There were two others, 2nd floor had the bar, and the 3rd floor was open air...and it was WAY too cold to explore up there!
Detroit coast featuring the Ren Cen & BCBS building light up pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness!
